A woman’s German Shepherd attacked her grandchild while the child was playing at her home, resulting in serious injuries and one of the worst attacks the attorneys on the case have ever seen.
J.S., the four-year-old who was two at the time of the attack, suffered a degloving injury to his head, 18 cm frontal scalp avulsion, full thickness laceration to his forehead, partial thickness laceration to his left ear, multiple bites, puncture wounds and bruises and a possible compression fracture to C2-C3, according to his attorney Joseph P. Winget of Placzek Winget & Placzek.
“There was some indication that the dog involved had a history of vicious, dangerous behavior,” according to Winget. “The attack occurred on the grandmother’s property in Lebanon. Immediately after the incident, the minor was life-flighted to Kansas City where he later underwent emergency surgery and further medical treatment.”
Based on the injuries it was clear the attack went on for an extended period of time, Winget said.
“One witness remarked, ‘The dog simply would not let go,’” he said.
The case was settled confidentially and did not go to litigation, the grandmother’s home-owner’s insurance paid the $1 million policy limit, Winget said.
“It’s one of the worst dog bite injuries I have seen. I have been doing this for a long time,” Winget said. “I tried a dog bite case several years ago, but this is the worst in terms of injuries I’ve ever seen.”
